Virginia Regional Technology Fair

On Saturday, March 9, 2002, CVA was well represented at Heritage High School in Newport News at the Virginia Students Technology Association Regional Technology Fair.  Mike Hill, teacher and coach from Denbigh High School in Newport News, invited us to exhibit some of our airplanes and answer questions about our hobby.  Many Junior High and High School students across the region exhibited and competed their projects of CO2 powered cars, hand launched and rubber (including catapult launched) powered airplanes, Computer Aided Designs, sail boats, and others.  Winners from the various competitions will compete at the state level in later competitions.  During the day, they had the opportunity to visit our area and look at planes and ask questions.  There was a lot of interest shown by students and adults alike.  Newport News Mayor, Joe Frank, visited our exhibit and spent some time with us.

CVA members, including John Backes, Ty Lyman, Bill Hamby, Dave Heape, Bill VanCleave, Mike Foster, and Gordon Taylor spent all day showing a variety of different airplanes and projects, including several beautiful giant scale airplanes.  John and Gordon gave flying demonstration with electric fliers, although the wind was pretty difficult to negotiate.  John flew his Soarstar until the wind crunched his wing because of a run-a-way strut, and Gordon impressed everyone with his Zagi flying skills, putting it through the paces many times to very impressed viewers.  Bill VanCleave had prepared handout material and provided a lot of information to many of the visitors.  Everyone stayed busy all day long answering questions and discussing the hobby with visitors.  It was a great opportunity to expose lots of interested individuals to our hobby.

A great big thanks to those who gave their time to represent the Club
